1884 Albert Handschin founds a knitwear factory in Liestal, Switzerland. His vision: Lingerie of natural fibers, soft and comfortable to wear – for the elegant, modern woman of the times. In 1913, the trademark HANRO is registered. It is composed of the name of Albert HANdschin and that of his business partner Carl ROnus.

From the very outset, HANRO concentrates on its patented circular-knitting technology which provides for a perfect fit and a pleasant wearing comfort: ultra-light and waist-accentuating "Spencer" Tops and circular-knit Bodysuits of the finest wool and silk. Originally, their function is to warm the body. Over time, they develop into fashionable and seductive items of lingerie.

During the difficult times of the Depression and the War, natural fibers are hard to come by. For a short time, the HANRO collections are partly made of artificial silk. Elegant Nightgowns and Robes establish HANRO’s reputation among the upper echelons of society.

In the 1950s, HANRO’s lingerie collections are a reflection of Hollywood glamour. Seductive, body-accentuating lace creations celebrate the newly discovered femininity.

1960-70 The economic boom and “flower power” provide society with new inspirations – raschel lace and new color schemes are the latest trends in lingerie. HANRO’s creative designs of raschel tricot rise to the top of the lingerie industry.

1985 HANRO leads the way towards a new, puristic sense of aesthetics by launching Cotton Seamless, cotton fine-rib of the most exquisite quality – ever since, the name HANRO has been inseparably linked to mercerized cotton. The Spaghetti Top “1501″ rapidly becomes a best-seller and gains international cult status through its popularity among many celebrities!

The 1990s give rise to the first wellness trends and bring new technical yarns: In 1999, HANRO reacts with the introduction of Touch Feeling – a milestone of seamless lingerie of incomparably soft microfiber. Legendary photo shoots turn lingerie into a lifestyle object.

The name HANRO is synonymous with the very finest lingerie. Innovative knitting technology leads to the introduction of Cotton Sensation in 2007: ultra-light cotton in the finest available gauge worldwide.

Loungewear – With their modern Loungewear and Homewear lines, the HANRO Collections increasingly reflect the casual trend of the new century. Casual outerwear shirts playfully link outerwear and underwear in a fashionable manner.

2009 marks the 125th anniversary of HANRO and is celebrated with the delicate lingerie featured in the Anniversary Collection.

2011 sees the relaunch of the popular Cotton Seamless range (since introduction in 1985 the HANRO bestseller), with new soft-mercerization and seamless and hemless manufacturing.
